JEFFERSON CITY — Adair County has been granted Agri-Ready County Designation by Missouri Farmers Care (MFC), a coalition of more than 40 leading agricultural groups. By achieving this designation, the Adair County Commission has taken action to support agricultural development, economic growth, and agricultural literacy programs. Through Agri-Ready County Designation, MFC identifies and promotes counties in Missouri that create an environment supportive to agriculture, Missouri’s largest industry.

“Agri-Ready County Designation has been a long time coming for Adair County,” said the Adair County Commissioners Mark Shahan, Bill King and Gayla McHenry. “We have been asked by local farmers and ranchers to pursue Agri-Ready Designation, which began conversations with Missouri Farmers Care. Our Commission is unified and the time is right to enter into this partnership to support agricultural opportunities. We are ready for economic growth in Adair County.”

Through the Agri-Ready County Designation program, MFC partners with county leaders to advance local agricultural enterprise, promote the county as a prime location for business expansion and enhance workforce readiness for agricultural careers. In addition, MFC partners with local FFA leaders to implement Agriculture Education on the Move™ in third-grade classrooms. Through the partnership, student leaders will present 10 hours of education on agricultural careers, crop science, livestock production and more through engaging, hands-on activities and lessons while developing their speaking and leadership skills.

“I appreciate the leadership of Adair County for this Agri-Ready Designation and for saying ‘Welcome, we are open for business,’” said Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn. “Agriculture is the backbone of northeast Missouri and this important designation from Missouri Farmers Care will strengthen relationships and offer opportunity for growth in all segments of the industry.”

According to the Missouri Department of Agriculture’s (MDA) 2021 Economic Contribution Study of Missouri Agriculture and Forestry, the agriculture industry in Adair County generated $816.8 million in economic output. This activity was led by crops, forestry and livestock. Agriculture, food and forestry industries have created 4,054 jobs which generate $243 million in household income for local families.

“With this designation, the Adair County Commission has taken a strong stand in support of agriculture,” said Ashley McCarty, executive director of Missouri Farmers Care. “As a fifth generation Adair County rancher, I’m encouraged by local leaders who recognize agriculture’s contribution to our economy and sense of community. Innovation and leadership are necessary to create opportunities so that the sixth generation will have a way to call the ranch home as well. Missouri agriculture stands united and looks forward to working with county leaders to grow agricultural literacy and opportunity in northeast Missouri.”

Counties wishing to apply for Agri-Ready County Designation must meet program requirements, including no ordinances regulating agriculture in conflict with state law and support of agricultural stewardship, growth, and opportunities. After the application is received from the county commission, the Missouri Farmers Care affirms compliance with the program guidelines prior to awarding and announcing designation.

With their designation, Adair County becomes the 74th Agri-Ready Designated Missouri county. More information about the program and Missouri Farmers Care can be found at www.mofarmerscare.com.
